AEON TEAMS UP WITH TENAGA NASIONAL BERHAD AND GSPARX TO BRING GREENER FUTURE
Kuala Lumpur, 13 April 2023 – AEON CO. (M) Bhd or AEON has signed a Supply Agreement for Renewable Energy (SARE) between Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and GSPARX Sdn. Bhd. (GSPARX) to install solar photovoltaic (PV) across AEON and AEON BiG shopping malls nationwide.
GSPARX is a wholly-owned subsidiary company of TNB Renewable Sdn. Bhd., a Tenaga Nasional Berhad Group company. With a focus on green retail generation business, GSPARX intends to unlock values in the local renewable energy market by investing in solar PV systems for retail electricity customers.
The agreement entails GSPARX to construct, operate and maintain solar facilities across AEON Malls and AEON BiG hypermarket nationwide with a system size of approximately 77,000 kWp for a period of 25 years. Upon completing all 40 locations, the rooftop solar solutions are capably of delivering 99 MWh of solar energy per year. This translates into over 70,000 metric tons of CO2 offset per year, which is equivalent to almost 1.2 million tree seedlings grown for 10 years.
The SARE was signed between Tsugutoshi Seko, Deputy Managing Director of AEON, Elmie Fairul Bin Mashuri, Managing Director of Gsparx Sdn Bhd and Nasaruddin Bin Mohd Zaini, Chief Customer Officer of TNB at a ceremony held at AEON Alpha Angle, Wangsa Maju on 12 April 2023.
The first installation by GSPARX for this project was completed in October 2022 at AEON Alpha Angle, which featured 1,513 kWp of PV Solar on the rooftop and ground level open air car park.
AEON sees this event as a significant breakthrough, allowing them to continuously promote energy-saving initiatives and deliver a greener future. By prioritising its sustainability agenda, AEON believes it can create long-term value for its shareholders, customers, and employees.
Tsugutoshi Seko emphasised that AEON remains committed to its sustainability initiatives and will continue to accelerate its sustainability initiatives with the installation of solar photovoltaic systems in its malls. The next phase of installation is expected to be carried out this year at 11 AEON Malls nationwide.
The implementation of solar power at AEON Malls and AEON BiG’s premises is in line with AEON’s effort to uphold the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Climate Change (SDG 13) and Life On Land (SDG 15), signifying AEON’s commitment to protect the environment, biodiversity and ecosystem.
