Kuala Lumpur, 20 October 2021
The management and employees of AEON CO. (M) BHD. and AEON BiG (M) SDN. BHD. or AEON are committed to be free of corruption. The commitment was expressed at the Declaration and Signing of Corruption-Free Pledge (IBR) ceremony organised in collaboration with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) at its headquarters, AEON Home Ground at AEON Taman Maluri Shopping Centre, Kuala Lumpur today.
At the hybrid event, Shafie Shamsuddin, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of AEON led the session. He was joined by nearly 200 people who took part in the pledge physically and virtually, comprising the management and a group of AEON employees. Also present virtually was Datuk Iskandar Sarudin, Chairman of AEON. It was witnessed by Deputy Commissioner Datuk Razim Mohd Noor, Director of the Community Education Division, MACC.
According to Shafie, “We are very grateful to be able to officially complete the Declaration and Signing of Corruption-Free Pledge (IBR) with the support and cooperation from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission. Its implementation is very important for us to continuously create the awareness and to instil the sense of abhorrence towards corruption at every level in AEON.”
Shafie added, “When every action or decision taken is based on integrity, without any corrupt influence, the company will be well-governed and will definitely be on the right track to continuously thrive. A sustainable company assures a brighter future for its employees and stakeholders. Viable companies, driven by high level of productivity will also contribute to the economic growth of the nation. AEON is determined to continue supporting IBR in carrying out the responsibilities entrusted upon us and will always support MACC’s effort in fighting corruption.”
The IBR by MACC is an initiative that emphasises on the pledge and oath voluntarily taken by the organisation’s leadership and employees in their individual capacity to ensure that everyone is accountable, more responsible in carrying out their duties and to deter them from engaging in any corrupt behaviour.
At the event, MACC also conducted a briefing entitled ‘Fighting Corruption in the Organisation’.
“At AEON, we always strive to instil good values among us. One of the approaches is through the AEON Code of Conduct, which is to always value the trust given by others and always act with integrity and sincerity in any situation. We declare this commitment with all AEON employees every time we meet during the monthly gathering,” concluded Shafie.
Today’s ceremony signifies AEON’s strong commitment in promoting the values of good governance and transparency towards realising the company’s mission and vision, as well as making AEON a corruption-free company. AEON practices zero tolerance towards corrupt behaviour and misconduct. It urges all stakeholders in its ecosystem especially AEON employees to avoid corruption and remain committed in carrying out their respective responsibilities with integrity.
AEON will continue with IBR in ensuring that its employees as well as its ecosystem comprising more than 12,000 people will give their commitment to be corruption-free.
AEON is aware that corruptions can also give a negative impact on economic development and undermine the country’s administrative structure. Therefore, AEON will continue to support the Government and its agencies to eradicate corruption for the country to continue prospering.
This stance is in line with AEON’s effort in championing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals with one of the pillars is Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (SDG 16). It aims to build strong and fair institutions in promoting peaceful and inclusive societies around the world by 2030, especially by promoting the rule of law, transparency, accountability, good governance and non-discrimination at all levels.
