AEON donates 300 motorcycles and offer employment as AEON Rider to the unemployed affected by Covid19

Kuala Lumpur, 06 August 2020

The AEON Group of Companies in Malaysia through their Foundation today contributed 300 new motorcycles at an event at their AEON Mall, Shah Alam. This initiative launched by the retail arm of the Group was the result of a “Berkat Ramadan – AEON Bersamamu” Campaign during the holy month of Ramadan, where proceeds from the sales of chickens at AEON Retail stores around the country resulted in a donation of RM1.45 million towards the project as AEON Rider, especially for those who lost jobs due to the Covid19 outbreak.

Selected riders were given contracts of employment at a base salary of RM1,200 for the period of one year, incentivized with additional fees for deliveries. After the first year of satisfactory performance, each of these 300 riders will be given ownership of their bike and the option to be employed as a permanent staff with AEON Company Malaysia.

Officiating at the event was YB Dato’ Sri Mustapa b. Mohamed, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Economic Affairs who commended AEON’s efforts in offering this timely job opportunity to those in need and in contributing towards the Government’s plans for economic recovery.

Speaking at the event was Shafie Shamsuddin, the CEO of AEON Retail Malaysia and Datin Yasmin Ahmad Merican, President of the Malaysian AEON Foundation.

In launching the AEON Rider project, Shafie Shamsuddin said “The Covid19 outbreak has transformed the lives of people around the world dramatically causing many corporations to be affected and have left many unemployed. Hence AEON Retail Malaysia has come forth to make a difference in the lives of those who lost their jobs. As a collaborative endeavour with the Malaysian AEON Foundation, AEON Rider would enhance our ability to execute some of our key programmes with the Foundation which now requires an efficient delivery service”.

The Malaysian AEON Foundation, representing the charitable activities of the AEON Group of Companies over the past 20 years, has been active in extending support and assistance throughout the MCO period covering not only the underprivileged, but also the frontliners. Some of the initiatives organized were the ‘Take a Break’ programme where MAF donated collapsible chairs and homecare boxes to the hospitals, as well as personal hygiene products, a week’s supply of meals and mineral waters every two weeks to the frontliners.

The yearly programme known as “AEON Mesra” where MAF invites thousands of underprivileged children to AEON Malls across the country to shop for festive ‘baju raya’ also continued with an innovative approach, despite the MCO.

“AEON Mesra is one of our favourite programmes as seeing the cheerful faces of children shopping for themselves and loved ones is what employees and volunteers from our family of companies look forward to participating and contributing every year. We traditionally invite children to our malls to shop during the festive seasons, but due to health concerns, we organized delivery of our gifts or developed alternative ways to reach them. For example during Ramadan, we issued AEON prepaid cards to the parents of the children to shop at our malls within the confines of MCO requirements”, added Datin Yasmin Ahmad Merican.

MCO period has seen MAF donated nearly RM400,000 in monetary and in-kind while continuing its mission and to-date, MAF has contributed more than RM11 million to charity causes.

Also present at the event were Board of Directors and Senior Management Members of the AEON Group of Companies, Datuk Iskandar Sarudin, Chairman of AEON Company Malaysia Berhad, Mr. Ng Eng Kiat, Chairman of AEON Credit Service Malaysia Berhad and AEON Group business partners.
